adobe barn
This project involves the patient transformation of an old adobe farmhouse nestling in the heart of a rural landscape. Each intervention was carefully thought out to preserve the soul of the place, while meeting today's needs. The mud walls, which have been preserved and reinforced, bear witness to ancient know-how, which we have sought to extend rather than erase. The openings have been reworked with solid stone or brick jambs, in keeping with traditional local techniques.
This renovation was an opportunity to experiment with a sensitive approach to building: adjusting rather than replacing, listening to the site before intervening. The roof structure was restored, and the interior volumes were redesigned to provide light and simplicity, while retaining the raw strength of the materials.
This project does not seek to impose a gesture, but to extend a story, with humility. It is part of a desire to learn by doing, to confront the realities of the building site and to pass on a particular attention to the materials, assemblies and rhythms of old buildings. It's a way of practising architecture that's rooted in the reality on the ground, in a dialogue between heritage and contemporary use.
